TASK 1
Statement of Intent I want to go into the creative industries with an understanding and scope for social, cultural and political issues. How can I educate myself and develop my skills so that when I begin to produce work for the public it can have a positive impact on people? Design and creativity should be fun and playful, and if not, should help create change and a better future. If all creatives instilled this ethos into their work the world would be a nicer place for everyone. I want to explore all areas of creativity, as I don't feel graphic design is pinned down as a discipline within one area. This means producing outputs that range from sculpting, fashion, publications, editorial and so on. My general interests will always be more grounded in physical production, but I love seeing these amalgamated into digital platforms so that they become accessible to everyone.
TASK 2
Questions About You and Your Design Practice
Set one
When considering your design practice what have you learnt in the last seven days?
My design practice always lends itself to longer, more passionate briefs. I find I always want to explore a subject that interests me thoroughly, these normally have a social direction or are based around people and individuals. I've also learnt that I find it difficult to work at home and without structure. In learning how to motivate myself to work alone and without the physical support of the tutors and university environment I am understanding myself more and the importance of time management. It makes me think of the world outside of university, and I think this is a good opportunity to prepare myself for this next stage of independence. Looking at this year under coronavirus in a constructive positive way helps me be more adaptable and look to resolve issues rather than make problems.
What practical skill do you envy in others?
I wish I had more digital skills in the various Adobe programs. I find myself constantly searching online how to do techniques and processes I have done before. I don't want to become a designer who resorts to computers to produce ideas, but I know how valuable it would be to use these resources for development and refinement of ideas. I'd like to be able to create 3D aesthetics specifically, and more animations. I also find it much harder to generate ideas than other people, but with brainstorming, research and so on I have found a process which works for me.
What do you admire the most about yourself?
I always want to do more, make more, develop it more, push it further etc. A project is never finished, not even once it has been completed to the level you aimed it to be from the start. I think a true passion project stays with you and you are always thinking of ways it could have been adapted or improved.
Do you think social media effects your mental health?
Not particularly. I'm sure it distracts me from more productive things. I could read a lot more, learn more and allow my boredom to take me to creative places.
Do you use humour improve your design practice?
I tend to go for more serious ideas, purely because I want the project to have a purpose (help people, make them think etc.) and a serious tone feels more appropriate when approaching difficult subjects. My ideas tend to have humorous elements to them and I do like the viewer/user to perceive the output as they wish - I don't want to enforce any notions upon anyone.
Set two
Is there anything your do differently to most people in relation to your design practice?
I think I take a more fine art approach as that it where my background lies in art and design. Following last year I've realised that graphic design really is what you make of it - either you are a commercial graphic designer to the most literal sense or a creative.
What makes you laugh?
stupid memes and people being silly
What is your biggest strength?
Being positive.
Would you consider yourself introverted or extroverted when presenting your work?
Extroverted.
What is your worst habit when evaluating your work formatively?
Commenting on what I knew already to be the case during the project. Otherwise I think I evaluate well because I am always doing it.
Set three
What is the biggest waste of time in your day?
Eating.
What brief are you looking forward to at the moment?
All of my briefs!
What do you often complain about when you are researching?
Not being able to find resources for free and easily.
What new design process do you want to learn?
3D, character creation, sculpting, animation.
What is the biggest challenge you have had to overcome in last two years within your
design process?
Getting through that initial idea generation and following rational research to create these ideas.
