Initial Idea 3 + 4 Development

= Going off of the sketches made when stuck on initial ideas, these produced some really successful ideas and outcomes

= the most successful aspect was the 3D painting style paired with the layering created by using blue tack for height on each section

= Separating each section of the piece worked well as it created this 3D approach, which would be lost if these were made digitally (which would be far easier and faster to do)

= the star for example has most of the different elements on the same layer of paper, and so this one loses the effect and is less interesting

= the peach and smoke cloud stand out because of the painting style adapted for those objects, which shows this approach is the best direction. The contrast between this style and the more block coloured shapes/sections creates balance, and presents the meeting point between a more traditional painterly style and the digital world

= The focus on sexual innuendoes and a sarcastic humour direction is a playful one that works with mocking sexuality and gender in an approachable light way

= The layering and cutting out of these outcomes almost feels like they are stickers
= Perhaps this works when referring to the notion of stickers = labels = categories of gender
= I didn't want to approach the design with a literal comment on the notion of 'labels' when creating gender inclusive clothes, however as my designs have led in this direction naturally it would be interesting to explore this further
= It is also a very abstract loose approach to 'labels' and so doesn't feel too on the nose

= Article on Its Nice That during lockdown showed an interesting take on the increase in fruit sticker aesthetic designs on the rise, relating it to a sense of nostalgia
= Having this nostalgia as a direction within the aesthetic would be appropriate for this brief, as gender within a sense is learnt as a child. What if the designs present this reconnection with who you are before you learn gender? At a time when it is more acceptable to cross dress (read in research) and not follow gender stereotypes of a man or woman
- As you get older, this gets less acceptable, and you are expected to conform to society's standards

- This idea could focus on this reconnection to childhood, before gender, nostalgia etc.

= The 2D within these designs are not the direction I would want to go but there are elements within these that I could use
= Range of type, colour choices, simplicity, layout

sticker exhibition

“Stickers are the little voice of a city,” Philipp and Beate tell It’s Nice That about the decision to choose the sticker format for the first group show. “They are not as eye-catching as a posters or as loud as billboards, but they are many and all are whispering to your eyes on your way through the city.”

“Everything here is tagged with stickers: house entrances, street masts, trash cans, electrical boxes,” the pair explain. “Everything is full of small messages. Some are political, a lot of them are just quick ideas somebody wanted to communicate.”

= A lot of gender inclusive  brands are quite loud with how they present their values

= What about those who want to be themselves in a quiet way?

= This sticker idea follows through with this notion

= What if the illustrations are based around the notion of seeing through a child's eyes?

= Illustrations could flip between more painterly aesthetic/detailed drawings and more naïve drawings

= Drawings done by me could be printed on transfer paper which could be ironed onto clothes

= The style could either be hyper realistic or more outlined, abstract

= Jul Quanouai work has more outlines with strong patterns
= This type of aesthetic would pair well with stitching designs or on plain t-shirts
= Keeps the idea of naivety and nostalgia with less developed drawings
= More 'abstract memory'

= Idea replication using quick images and cut outs
= Presents ambiguous abstract comment on childhood, a children's perspective, fruit for innuendoes and hints to nostalgia

TO DO
Produce examples of this for proper initial idea (how would it work on clothes?)
Think about a third initial idea
