Brief

Create a publication exploring hedonism within a religious, philosophical and psychology context.

Background/Considerations

Content Considerations

What is the capacity of human desire, particularly when at the cost of others and their own values? Explore the extreme scale of people engaging in these hedonistic activities.

This outcome/publication will be kept to social commentary, with experimental visuals central to the outcome. It should incorporate mixed media processes such as collage, sculpting and photography. The aesthetic should follow a religious inspired direction, subverting traditional religious imagery and connotations.

Physical production choices should be made to reflect the topic and discussions, eg. the front cover alike to a Bible. The tone should be kept camp and satirical. Possible additional digital outcomes exploring the made imagery could also be made, eg. virtual reality Sistine chapel covered in hedonistic photography.

Collaborators involve graphic designer Leon Davis and fashion photographer Ell Sirs. Both will contribute ideas from their respective areas of interest and profession and will provide developments and outputs to be incorporated into the final outcome. My role is to oversee the direction of the project, bringing together the collaborators and creating the outcome in which the collaborators contribute towards. This involves design of the final product and making it cohesive and interesting. I will also be producing outputs to be presented in this final outcome.

Background Considerations

The target audience is people who engage with platforms like iD and VICE and are people who enjoy coffee table books and more experimental artistic publications. They are a creative group of people that are also interested in and feel comfortable around the topic of hedonism and satirical commentary on sensitive topics such as religion. These are people of all ethnicities and classes, but within the demographic of young adults, from 18 to 30 years old.
