Draft 1 Feedback + Further Research
PUBLICATION SO FAR FEEDBACK WITH RHIANNA
> First page first development not finished, just an experiment
> Little intro writing to show to the catalogue side of the magazine, and give context to what it is
> Love how the magazine has become about selling futuristic items, almost like a catalogue from the future, keep this tone and heighten it with the cover and first page
> Get me to write this as I have been writing the details and text in the whole publication and so I'll have the same tone
> Can look at catalogue first pages and take inspo from how they introduce products and selling things to a possible consumer
> Chang the photos to newer images of them with better white balance
> Need more double spreads
> Two single images of metal boy for double spread
> Wireframe lines have disappeared in PDF or were hard to see so these should have the opacity increased
> Double spread here as these are quite detailed
> Just over half way and smaller image, or skinny one and full bleed
alive mirror 3 and 1 jpg
> Less details, simple wireframe low opacities
> Favourite spread, works really well
> I love the metallic quality to the image on the left, get photographer to do this do full bleed spread of mirrored manipulations of ginger girl for later on to create some difference between her images throughout the magazine so it doesn't feel repetitive
> Increase opacity as it feels too plain compared to other spreads now
> Like the break from colours
> May take out as it isn't consistent with the colour themes and the human touch on digital rather than fully digital technical aesthetic
> Replace the image on the right with material textures
> Only spread where there are two different people
> Feels inconsistent, add another picture of him on this and create new spread with her?
> Simple spread with gold girl with tubes and simple wireframes
> Crop with him on the right
> Pic on the right feels too human, out of place, just a nice picture
> Rhianna wanted to have another spread with her but there is a lack of other images
> Could have it small somewhere but can be taken out
> Breaks it up a lot which is really nice
> Focus on textures
> Change the back image back to where it was with the reflected models in the background being seen
> Try out the right picture as a 2/3s image with wireframe detail on the left
> Left image looks dark to be changed
> Add more detail to image on left, text around circles etc.
> Have the left page as the back page
> wanted to have full bleed image as back page and inside cover at the end
> but this would have to be an amazing image and there are no full bleed pictures which are impactful left
> Could put the girl just on her own in white space at the back?
COVER IDEAS
Either Rhianna Metallic image or Aaron picture? Both very strong images
> Photographer has problems with Rhianna image as the lighting isn't flattering on the model's face and there are shadows beneath her eyes and on her nose
> Aaron picture works well as it is an image not manipulated, and therefore with a more human touch. It alludes to the notion of something happening, and a change occurring with the light lines (like teleportation)
> Initial idea of cover design was to incorporate shapes with a photo so that the shapes come round the back for both an abstract back cover and a photographic front cover
> But the light shapes from exposure of the photograph of Aaron's image are so unique that creating digitally shapes and light may not look consistent or may look low quality as they are digital versus real
> What if we stretched the light shapes from the photo to the back of the book?
> Photographer will work on stretching from his ear in the photo to have the light extend onto the back cover, while I will work on the cover layout of the name and other elements
> Want this cover to be quite commercial and simple, with common large name in specific type and focus on photography, like DAZED magazine
> Older DAZED magazines have a lot more text and infor going on in the front, whereas the new design system seems to follow an extremely simple direction with just the name, photo and small essential information
> Interestingly, IKEA catalogue one of the most famous catalogues in the world, has a similar layout and direction as DAZED, two completely different prints
> This simple direction is one taken by most contemporary magazines, going for a more pared back, cleaner aesthetic
> Emulsion type for cover name is more futuristic but importantly it is only the E that has been abstracted dramatically, whereas the other letterforms follows the very simple, legible direction the other magazines take on
> Also like how they have used a mixture of very digital pixelated type with sans serif condensed simple type in one spread, which could be used for this publication as a hint to transhumanism
> The choice of letters being changed to the digital pixelated type could change depending on the publication being printed again as a different theme etc.
> Simple choice of production method like foiling would also enhance the cover in a simple way, and would be a very appropriate choice with the amount of golds and silvers in the content design and photographs
> Gives a very strong futuristic feel straight away
Futuristic/ Transhumanism Cover Designs
> These also follow the same principle of strong, bold sans serif type magazine name and a focus on the photography
> The interaction between this photos and the title is more interested than the way DAZED layer them above one another, but this photos does enable an ability for interaction whereas the full bleed close face images don't (like the Aaron picture)
> Additional 3D animations for PAPER magazine on Instagram was interesting
> Allude to the Paper magazine layout within the animation
> This could be good to do with some of the photography for a level up on Instagram about the publication
