Initial Designs
- Wants the publication to be A4 minimum
- As printing on that size you have to use A3 paper for the bleed, making it slightly bigger than A4 and smaller than A3 will cost the same and mean she gets her publication to be a big size
Page Size:
(width) 246.68 mm x (height) 348.88 mm
Spread:
493.36 mm x 348.88 mm
With 5 mm Bleed:
498.36 mm x 353.88 mm
> Waiting for photos from Rhianna work on shape textures she showed preference for
INITIAL TEXTURE EXPERIMENTS
> Found imagery and additional shapes manipulated to create the abstract textures Rhianna liked from the moodboard
> Pixilation and other processes that allude to the digital and man made world
> Problem is these are somewhat over developed and complicated
> More unified abstract pieces where the layers merge together work better than the distinctive layers of different visuals
> None of these are particularly strong, think this is a process I will have to work on
> Looking at the layout and actual spread design and getting head around starting on this
> Reverted back to a process I feel comfortable with in using 3D lines to interact with the images
> How can I create a futuristic aesthetic that involves graphics and the photographs?
>With amount of images of this girl in specific position, placing her around on the spread like a presentation of a mannequin or future cyborg relays a futuristic idea
> Line too thick to wrap around images, but if it is made too thin it will feel more like a worm or rope rather than a 3D element of colour in the background
> Gradient instead works better with the images themselves in rectangular forms
> If I want to interact background with foreground then the person needs to be cut out to allow things to wrap around
> Using the NASA imagery as starting point for create a futuristic scientific aesthetic
> Interacts with the person in each image
> Lines and 3D orb providing additional details
> Cut out of different parts of different pictured girls to allow the images to over lay on each other, making it seem less like images of the same person and more like they are all separate entities in one photo, alluding to how they may be man made machines
> Layering and dimensions between all elements heightened with use of type right page above one image of girl, with other image of girl below appearing above with use of opacity levels in text
> Really like the direction of this spread as starting point, feels almost retro futuristic, a playful question on the notion of future and what it is
> Looking to the DAZED article on transhumanism for relevant language on the topic to use which works well
> Following the simplicity and layering direction of first design
> Repetition of image and decreasing size of image creates sense of depth and an almost digital movement
> As her face is a strong focus of piece and there are variations of this provided by Rhianna, making this spread about some future face technology is an interesting direction
> DAZED article talks about new AR make up, what if there are digital face manipulations in the future? Something where it makes you purposefully look more virtual
> Face mapping textures placed over the top from snapchat filter on the different angles of her face
> Additional lines for added futuristic detail and 3D wireframe head to immediately allude to the viewer the theme of the page
> Simple text allows the visuals to take prominence, which is important within the brief as a photography publication
> Placement of mirrored image at centre of page to emphasise the process of which the image was manipulated
> More visuals to surround this makes sense to use the different textile and texture images taken by Rhianna that are not necessarily picked out by her to use
> Gives focus on the futuristic lights and reflections that are a strong theme within the photography style of images by Rhianna
> Rhianna feedback: Instead of still lifes can we change the surrounding images to body parts instead?
> Suggestions worked really well as there are lots of photos available of these manipulated mirrored images
> Like the face mapping spread, additional images alongside the main image to provide a focus on the theme of the spread
> Experiments with thresholding the same images to create different visuals when there are not enough images to fill a space with the desired layout
> Use of type for detail and texture to the page rather than to provide info, using terms like ENHANCE taken from the DAZED article to heighten the tone of futurism and transhumanism
> Gradient feels almost flat? What about utilising the textile images Rhianna has provided from previous shoot for full bleed background visuals?
> Rhianna: Not a fan of the circles, doesn't feel very editorial, can we make the full spread feel like a mirrored image using two of the images?
> Wants a double mirroring of similar images to create full bleed effect
> Problem is the layout she suggested does not fit onto the spread
> To bring this spread together with the previous spread designs it should have some form of text or detail, eg. lines?
> Small NASA symbol for detail visuals
> Use of word exhibit on aesthetic research designs is a strong word to reference something that feels non-human, and almost alien
> Application of this to the different images and parts of the body on this spread heightens this transhumanism tone
TO DO:
> Produce more spreads
> Possible development of abstract textures or leave these behind?
