Play Campaign Research, Initial Ideas and Development

 Research

- How are other events branded?

- What other playful interesting aesthetics and directions have been taken?

- Perception and simplicity can be achieved in different ways

EVENT POSTERS AND ANIMATIONS

> Strong contrasting colours, simple, legible type and layout and use of redaction creates sense of rebellion reflecting an appropriate ethos of group Extinction Rebellion

Other climate change Posters and Design that are interesting

GLUG

Having provided guidelines with template examples of what to submit, there is plenty of room for creative freedom – but imperative is the use of “meme-like content, slapstick imagery, comedy, banter, stupid phrasing, and downright light-hearted mockery if needed,” as proclaimed by Glug. “Get your tag lines out, put your lighters in the air (but don’t turn them on) and show the world what you’ve got.”

> Strong simple ideas
> Use of different medias used to elevate each idea eg. use of drawing for the former evokes more emotion as you feel it may be drawn by a child

THEATRE, BOXING, CINEMA, ART AWARDS ETC.

> These all work because they have one idea and they centralise and focus on that
> Limited colour choices, and if the main focus is colour these are refined to specific gradients and choices
> Information is either made a predominant element on the poster interacting with the visuals or the visuals are made to engage the audience to encourage further look at information
> Interaction between photography and the text for some posters is interesting, particularly the meat poster which follows the idea I had to recreate a poster using objects and items
> Has to be done very well for it to have an impact and be successful

HYPERTEXT was a virtual art book fair presented by Bound Art Book Fair in collaboration with Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool. The fair ran 24 hours a day over the weekend of 28 + 29 November 2020. Bound Art Book Fair is typically held at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, but we took the decision to create an online event for 2020 in order to support our community in this time of crisis, and drive revenue to artists and publishers.

> Posters moving onto a digital platform and then that screen shot used as the actual poster is an interesting twist on the digital age of events in lockdown

> This development of physical print being shown in a digital way creates these extra dimensions to the pieces

> The posters themselves are not particularly interesting, with gradient background, simple layout and type
> The interesting factor comes from its purpose
> Constantly seeing successful design comes from a strong idea and simplicity, with the focus on the concept

> What if I take a picture of something on my tv and make that into the poster?

> It could be edited pictures of the different videos being shown?

> What should be around the tv to give off this idea of play and perception?

> There could be interesting lighting as lights and shadows are an important part in many of the films, shapes...?

> Elements from all films taken and merged together almost like the Three Stages film and the first idea I made
> Faces merged create these weird new characters
> Hands and arms of raver from the morning after night before in the background with tv noise texture
> Wanted to create a sense of movement and bodies
> Couldn't' merge all elements of the people from the videos as this became overcomplicated, so two characters were made
> If specific items were chosen from each face into a collage element this would work well if I had access to a printer I could do this quickly
> Could create this if group likes this direction

> Saw that there was a mark left on the glass from paper and dust and played around with writing out play here to make real type in the photograph
> This was creepy however and meant I couldn't choose the type being used for the words, only handwritten
> It was also hard to highlight in different angles when prioritising the tv screen for the photo

> Difficulty with photography poster is the photograph has to be planned out to ensure there are spaces for the poster text, things have to be moved around and items have to be placed which may not be accessible
> The idea of a TV alongside the CURATE.TV name works but is not particularly interesting
> I used lights to play with shadow but this brings in another element taht makes the idea convoluted and too complicated
> Once there is playing around with light and shadows the idea of the text could be shadows, and this is difficult to do with paper cut outs and a phone camera, so would be best done digitally.

> This idea could be pursued if it is liked by the rest of the group but it feels complicated and overdeveloped
> The illustrations of the masks inspired by the bauhaus film and in relation to perspective and people's faces actually are more interesting on their own

> Used these as a main focus of a poster and added TV static texture and shapes in reference to some of the films

> In revisiting the brief however the brand is simple and bold, and so elements that were played around with were taken into a new poster with this new direction in mind
> With ideas of all the films, this piece was made to present more literal representation of play
> It has reference to all the films in different elements, but all are consistent with each otehr and cohesive:
abstract shape for bauhaus, nose on abstract shape and hat on person for grace kelly, spilt bottle and the hanging person for the fun of the morning after the night before, use of light and shadows for O Superman.
General links are not obvious and this is the fun of the piece I think

> Speckles were placed across the poster for texture and for reference to a screen, rather than the stronger tv textures used for previous ideas
> The type of the 7PM may create the wrong tone however and suggest something eerie and creepy rather than playful

> Changing the spilt liquid to be yellow to play with perspective and distortion does not work that well and instead makes the image unclear on what is happening

> Best initial idea is still the first one designed yesterday which utilises distorted type as its focus and simple changing visuals
> There are elements within these ideas however which are interesting and can be picked out, refined and simplified with the group to create something developed

OTHER INITIAL IDEAS + GROUP DEVELOPMENTS

> Playing with the crayon idea from initial ideas of using mediums that have the association of playful and naïve
> Felt that the structuring and use of grids would work well for reproducing on other outputs easily but also restricted the level of experimentation

> Drawing back to colours he used for previous campaign with the detail of the crayon
> Looking into how the crayon could be used as a continuous element to present this sense of flow and playfulness

> Following idea of using collage to create layering, dimension and play with distortions and perception, these are physically ripped images which provides nice texture
> Typesetting of PLAY border needs improving but general aesthetic is very eye catching and definitely contrasting
> Use of crayon in changing gradient is nice
> There is a lack of link with the videos that are being shown at the event however
> Difficulty is: How to create something playful, simple and bold while also referencing the videos without being too obvious?

> Example of how motion could be used with such aesthetic
> Type could be more playful and distorted

> Additional Collage pieces that are less refined in colour choices but have a nice organic raw quality to them
> Progression in animation between the text and visuals is successful and interesting, with repetition and changes helping keep your attention and give you information

> Integration of TV idea and Collage
> Group liked the TV idea I created and felt that the reference to the CURATE.TV was good
> Feel that it may be a too obvious reference and is not playful enough for the brief set
> Idea behind the TV was to utilise photography and real life elements to create dimensions between the viewer and poster, but this is too difficult without planning and access in lockdown to equipment, space and items

> The colouring of this and the layering of the images and drawing is how the collage for the aesthetic could be done with one colour
> Decided in group:

Combine my first initial idea using the type and millie's colourful collage with crayon
> Strong type will be the focus
> Collaging will provide texture, dimension, and play with perspective and abstractionism
> Images used in collages will have links to the films being shown at event eg. people's faces, people dancing etc.
> Use of crayons and drawings on top will create this link with the illustrated video
> Overall aesthetic will be playful, colourful and refined to be simple and legible

> Colours interchange between blue, yellow, pink on the
type, visuals and background solid fill

> Photos must therefore be developed to be coloured
> Between all 6 posters these colours will change to create distinction between them all, but maintain consistency

TOM VIDEO DEVELOPMENT IDEA

> Finished moving posters can be placed onto Tom projection layout for movement and film on social media

ROLES

- Millie: Poster

- Mel: Social Media

- Tom: Animation of products

- M/M: Flyer

POSTER DEVELOPMENT

> Works really well
> Slight legibility issue with body text for information but this can be improved with arrangement of images and colour choices of such images
> Text can also be moved if necessary
> Alteration of images in background being from white to coloured as that was the original plan but I think it works well with the scans in the background as white to create balance and let all the elements stand out and breathe
