Spread Development 4

> Images that Rhianna wants included but I feel may be too repetitious as there is already these mirrored manipulations of this shoot near the start of the publication

> Asked her to manipulate them with the silvering effect that is on another spread photo as this may give the spread a different tone which will help it feel distinctive from the similar spread

> Rhianna specifically wants these photos in a layout she has seen in another magazine, with a thin photo on the left and another image 2/3 across the page

> However the right image is not a shape that works 2/3 across as its a square shape rather than rectangular to fit the right page at least

> This would look best smaller on the right and so will be difficult to complete this spread in the way Rhianna wants

Alternative layouts to show Rhianna:

> Still wants the original layout
> Will come back to this as the layout is giving me creative block on how to tackle it

> Following discussion on changing the image of the girl with gold make up on this spread, looked to which images could replace it
> Want something interesting, which will reflect the message of turbo avatar
> This image is interesting but feels bland in colours and light compared to the left image
> Look at manipulating it with thresholding/gradient mapping to create silver tones in the image?

> New spread with similar aesthetic for images of the gold girl to be presented
> Not the original image that was on the first spread but more interesting pictures
> Keeping same aesthetic allows both spreads to have the theme of avatars, and to present both people as possible avatars to the viewer, 'the future consumer'
> Same text layout of numbers vertical in page corners to first spread
> Simple stroke text for detail and texture

> Would it look better with more differentiation between both pages in the images and their size?

> Rhianna Feedback: Prefer the first spread design with larger images and stroke type

> Bitmapping and gradient mapping the image, playing around with levels, developed the image into a comic book art style that significantly reflects the notion of it being an avatar, a character

> Monochrome version creates silvered idea, but coloured version brings left and right page together with the brown tones

> Rhianna wanting the skirt image to have a whole spread, but it only reached 2/3
> Border of white on the side could be used as space for type, but felt that a full bleed background would mean an experimentation of gold type on the side would be more prominent as the grey background is silver in tone
> Extended image and experimented with golden types to bring out the golden colour of the top

> Space on the left almost wants a badge, or banner?
> Type on its own almost feels minimal in this space
> Play with negative space type?

> Mixture 3D shapes on the spread creates the extra balance with the composition of the image, with the additional circle bottom left balancing with the weight of the focus in the photo on the right page
> Alterations with colour to ensure the badges match the top, with more bronze aesthetic

> Last page development idea to hint to what's in store in the future from this catalogue
> Cyborgs?
> Simple last page, to leave lasting impact, very strong tone

> Wanted to add more details, keeping the page simple and impactful, minimal to create ominous feel to the viewer to make them question this reality of the future
> Details make it a more developed design, makes it feel more real
> Catalogues do a lot of numbering, to keep it organised for the viewer to buy things easily
> Numbers bigger than black circles work well in creating futuristic numbering
> Wanted the system in which they would purchase this to feel extremely futuristic, so replaced numbers with squares to make them seem like some futuristic barcode

> First Page Development following similar direction, with use of circles for focus windows and annotation alike to NASA blueprints
> Contents page of catalogues tend to have lots of adverts, so these were recreated with text boxes of exaggerated promises and selling jargon
> Badges feel too much on this page: Too many aesthetics going on? Should just be the yellow circles and 2D annotation aesthetic not additional 3D metallic aesthetic

> Should emphasise the foreboding questions behind this topic of transhumanism and the future of man and machine through a terms and conditions?
> Keeps to the tone of a catalogue and advert but presents real questions

> Wanted to add page numbers but there was no made space for this with the circle visuals and size and centralised layout of the type
> Low opacity layered page numbers work well
> Not necessary for this actual publication for page numbers to be distinct for every page
> Creates detail that also feels futuristic

> Return to last spread found difficult due to the layout and image sizes
> Shape of image on the left felt like it needed decoration and detail to balance on the page, looked to futuristic symbols and shapes as an addition

> Feels too plain, and the futuristic shapes with lower opacity work better when made into outlines with a grainy quality
> Stroke text works well and gradient background enables their legibility more, whilst also creating colour consistency between all elements
> White space on left page feels too empty
> Bring across everything from right page?

> More interesting typeface for main heading text, keeping the original typeface for right page for variety in elements being placed across the spread and on selective pages
> This typeface brings out the gritty nature of the symbols and with the distorted nature of the letterforms it also reflects the jagged angles of the arms in the main photo of the model
> Rounded edges in main photo would be consistent with the circular and rounded square windows throughout the publication?

> Final design works well: Rose tone gradient and colours of overall spread coincides with the metallic tones and more pink tones respectively in other spreads. Has rounded stroke windows of images and futuristic detail
