Identity Further Research and Ideas

Other Research on Symbols and Typesetting

David Linchen

> Explores how symbols become entangled with identity

> Incorporating collage, typography and even formal painting techniques

> Finding objects in the studio, or across the city or online, and transforming them into gestures

"The element of chance is also important in my work,” continues David, “My works are usually layered together by these pieces. I want to think these different elements are in constant dialogue with one another and form a greater whole"

> Reflection of the artist's identity themselves rather than about helping the viewer think about theirs

> Elements of this work that could work well within the progression of my idea

> Using random objects to make the viewer question what is it that makes us who we are? We are made of moments, environments, items etc.

> I like the digital manipulations and aesthetic of his work, creates an abstract image with monochrome tones that only make sense once you look closer, very reflective of introspection or observation of a person

> The more abstract quality of this style compared to Ryan Carl is definitely more interesting to me but I'd be keen to look at combining both ideas to create visuals which incorporate abstract and analytical

Lewk Wilmhurst

Shards of fiction and fact collide in boldly stylistic digital works

So far, for example, he’s reworked the famous English nursery rhyme Sing a Song of Sixpence

> His work also feels similar to Linchen's in that it explores the artist's identity through symbols and abstract imagery, just through a different style and through a more visual foundation

> I would be interested in creating such pieces for myself if this was a direction I choose to go in, but I think it would be more interesting if I manage to work out how I can produce such visuals in a way that makes the viewer themselves question the subject of identity and their own identity

> Could I ask a group of people what specific 5 things they grew up with in childhood, and produce visuals for this

> Alongside these, diagrams presenting the magic tricks could be placed there as a reference to identity being this alluding subject for people, the transparency and mystery around it but something that is still perhaps controlled by the person

> Could the viewer be told to pick the most appropriate visual for them and then the end result will assert them as the same thing for every option: Unknown...

1 What was your favourite drink as a child?

2 What is your favourite colour?

3 Where did you live growing up?

4 What is one of your favourite TV shows, either from growing up or currently?

5 Which shape best represents you?

1 Cream Soda

2 Purple

3 Market Drayton

4 Avatar

5 Rounded Rectangle

1 sparkling water

2 turquoise

3 crouch end - urban

4 teletubbies

5 Octagon

Peer Feedback = first one most successful in communicating the idea

This idea could be developed to be more reflective of the person visualised from questions later on

> All using same colour and same manipulations as way of bringing all different pieces together for the identity of the person, but this makes it lose it's gag quality of the pictures themselves being there

> Also could be done better with more texture and dimension but quick reflection of idea

> Very abstract at the moment, little link to reader about identity?

> Diagrams have no relevance with image and idea feels convoluted, should I leave this behind or explore it separately?

Peer Feedback
> Like the layout, and colour coordination
> Actual image development at the top is not that well developed

> While I find this visually appealing and interesting in terms of presenting someone's identity and childhood basis, the specific items from the questions makes the piece feel more about childhood than overall identity, although aren't these inextricably linked?

> If the person this is about saw this would it make them question their identity?
