Commercial Expressionism Research + Initial Ideas
JAMES PHOTOGRPAHY PROJECT INSPIRED BY:
About my work: I paint powerful and expressive figures that would feel at home in both the ancient and contemporary world. My style is rooted in the passions of antiquity, while being refreshing and raw in its modernity. My figures are relics from a more heroic time - fragmented and mysterious. Energy and vitality are dear to me, so I craft works of immediacy that display a balance of precise control and gestural abandon. Devoid of ornamentation, they are instead simple and spontaneous; minimal, yet compelling. My work brings with it a bold and heroic presence, a one-of-a-kind and unique experience. |
- emphasis on the maximizing of profit."concern about state enterprise deficits prompted efforts for greater commercialism"
- DEROGATORYconcern with the making of profit at the expense of artistic or other value."the cut-throat commercialism of the Paris art world"
> Could this be placed at the start of the newspaper as a reference to the reader on what this newspaper investigates?
> Strong examples of very commercial photography and commercial magazine layout
> Not many examples of their text inside, but as looking at the other more expressionist relevant text it appeals more
> Having very commercial text might seem out of place and confusing
INITIAL IDEAS + LAYOUTS
> Strong connections between the product images and the people images through colour choice
> Connection between the product and people and the subverting of ornamentation and objectification: Placing them together to help the reader see this abstractionism between the two
> Perfumes personify the people and the people reflect the qualities of the product in a way that gives it energy, a human quality and spirit
> Ask James about possible extra pictures of people/products when there is one missing from the other to create this connection
> Playing around with different typefaces and type layouts: too futuristic type may give a technological digital feel which isn't the direction
> More modern organic quality decorative text appropriate in creating
> Like the visual quality of having the type with interesting rag, but depends on preference of James with more subtle, cohesive text
> Diversifying typefaces within sentences provides that additional detail and character needed when presenting the notion of different personalities and qualities within products
> Stroke works best with these images to create detail without interfering with white negative space of page (that the photographer wants) and the images themselves
> Outline of product pictured that can be placed over different people images to present their spirits connected to the product
> This can then be a symbol within the page that represents the bottle as personified by the different people
> All additional graphics on spread made the same colour pulled from the photographs to create detail not too prominent beside photographs and for an interesting colour dimension
