TEXT

> Use of Ell's research presentation as text for publication makes sense as it contextualises all images for the viewer and is highly relevant

> Needs refining and rewriting on some aspects to ensure it is grammatically correct and fully cohesive however, which will take time

> If choosing to involve large bodies of text important that this text is of high quality and not a side thought to design

DESIGN

> Simple use of large text, type same as initial ideas as strongly reflects tone of modern take on german porn mag, decorative type that feels charged with its sharp legs and almost gothic aesthetic

> Typesetting working best with justified type with the spaces available with such large images, compared to initial idea of having text flush against images, so that the straight edge of text would be against an image rather than coinciding with edge of page or typical flush left. This created a sense of magnetised pull and power between the text and images, and playing with subverting traditions and so on

> But with minimal space the possibility for an unappealing rag with large pieces of text is larger and so justified works better in creating a concise balanced composition between all elements

> Typesetting of words with justified means more work will have to be done to ensure there are not large spaces between words in small columns however

> Use of mirrored letter form P from GIMP on right image could be good for utilising the type as a decorative form as well as for text, however it means the reader may just see 'GIM' as the P becomes a visual rather than a readable element

> Spread to be made to have use of both types, with gothic type for titles on the subject of each spread, and more modern type on general descriptions or tones of subject

> With lots of images from a shoot that should be involved alongside the text from her research presentation on the topic it means there's a lot of elements to balance on the spread without it feeling overcomplicated and busy

> All type and text should maintain similar sizing (body text always 10 pt minimum for A4 print legibility), as drastic changes in headings and subheadings will feel inconsistent

> Peer Feedback - Can't have white borders on images and the title and text all too much, would take out white borders or remove headline
> Want to maintain the vintage porn mag aesthetic with the borders, also means the images are prominent and clear on black background
> Not having title on spread would be inconsistent with direction on having titles for each subject eg. as seen on GIMP spread

> Third iteration most successful, moving title to be predominantly on left page gives negative space on right page for all images and text
> Main headline not as legible as possible however
> Could this shoot be spread onto two spreads to give needed space for all elements and ideas?
> Will allow more appreciation and focus for each element as well

> Interaction between heading and sub heading with interlinking of heading letter form legs and spines with counters and apertures of subheading

> Interlocking between typefaces could become a motif throughout to elevate ideas of bondage and intimacy, especially as the use of black type interweaving over white type visually reflects the leather straps on the gimp's pale body

> Four images used previously were not consistent
> Wanted to create a sequence, a narrative of the gimp being increasingly dominated as the pictures progress, but with three images and needing to ensure images can be seen with the spine there I had to add another image of the candle hand picture
> This meant it felt balanced with two on each side, no picture was in the spine and there was a storytelling layout
> But this candle picture ruined the narrative, tried various other pictures from different shoots in the basement but these weren't of the same lighter tones, and the bricks were darker which felt inconsistent too
> Instead of using another images moved the text from below the pictures to the side to fill this gap of a missing picture with typesetting instead
> Works successfully and creates an interesting spread

> Title given space between letterforms T and R to ensure spine does not make title illegible when printed

>Greater space for the elements to breathe working well
> Feels quite empty however there is perhaps too much space?
> Addition of type vertically against right page edge to balance this space
> Use of subheading type in stroke at this size however feels almost more futuristic rather than porn-esque or vintage
> Would adding a third typeface be too much?
> Use larger body text?

> Like both of these spreads equally, no white borders allows the image to feel darker, more ominous and ethereal, whereas having a white border creates consistency

> Ell Feedback: Preference for white borders

> Development reflection: Are there enough images that don't feel inherently sexy or kinky that can be added to the 'art' section?
> This section was planned as half of the publication but with developments so far it feels more relevant to either change it to a one spread art section or take it out completely
> Does investigation into art vs porn need to be obvious in the design if it is a general subject explored in her photography? The photography would explore that itself?
> The direction in which the design is going also means the publication itself is becoming an art piece, an artefacts of sorts, especially when it is to be photographed in a fancy sex box
> It would be more inconsistent and less thematic to have the 'art' aesthetic partly in the publication than focussing on this darker style throughout, and creating the publication in this style as an art piece that blurs the lines between art and porn

> These are the images left that I don't feel add anything to the publication and aren't as interesting or consistent with the photography style throughout
> More of earlier/test shoots

> Eye texture background more appropriate in relating to maggot texture or ideas of maggot themes
> Leather more appropriate for spread, where eye texture has been used, on more naked pictures and whipping with leather toys
> Portrait pictures more appropriate for layout balance and are less repetitive as images

> Don't want the titles of the spreads to be 'rat', snake' etc.
> But having the titles temptress and gimp are the only literal name titles there could be
> Use derogatory terms as headlines throughout?
> This will feel strange beside the series of images of the man being dominated, and the reader will be encouraged to question why it feels wrong seeing these together when they're used to seeing it in the context of women being dominated

> slave
> slut
> whore
> Cum slut
> cum dumpster
> cunt

> Feels inconsistent having these tiles beside the more article relevant ones where the headings are related to the text
> Peer Feedback: Works fine having a mixture of both, eg. gimp and whore are still connected in theme
