Development + Discussion

DEVELOPMENT

> Taken out watch and ring images as agreed with photographer that they feel inconsistent within the newspaper when there are predominantly perfume bottles

> No more studio time or opportunities to photograph more images as I suggested when first playing around with images and layout, so images that I like but don't match will have to be taken out too

> Try and use images that don't match with any perfume pictures on front or back cover?

> James liked stroke shapes of bottles as a way of referencing the relationship between the people and products, so these are continued throughout

> Further text from artist James was inspired from taken as a way to comment on this expressionist photography direction

> Pages changed order to allow colours to shift throughout from brightest to darkest for a sense of journey and for there to be less of a dramatic shift and change within colours which may feel more inconsistent when flicking through newspaper

> All perfume bottle outline forms taken and placed on back page to present them collectively and as a sort of summarising last page

> Works well with chosen last image as it contains all the colours from all the different spreads

> Flip vertical bottom right image so the arm going up wraps around the main full bleed right image to create more compositional balance

> Change left image to be facing perfume bottle to create more connection between two images?

> All eyes and images of people are oriented so that they are towards or looking at the product on the left, this should be done with all images

FRONT PAGE IDEAS

> Motif of perfume bottles and the use of their forms for additional graphics should be used on front page

> Image I like but doesn't have matching perfume bottle could be used on front cover

> Either shape of bottle or photograph itself doesn't work well in this

> Shape with neck of bottle and blue space creates strange distortion

> Use of other image that doesn't fit in newspaper that could be used on the front
> I like the story it gives with the hovering bottle and hand but should it be simplified and stripped back for more effective front page?
> Colours also not very vibrant compared to inside design

> Different image and perfume bottle already more successful, zoom in on face and placement of hair within bottle top to create this illusion of her face as the perfume liquid
> Red tones in her face matching with red tones in hand

> Most successful experiment as the full bleed image has impact and prominence, colour and vibrancy
> Negative space perfume bottle create this sense that they are connected, part of her is in the bottle, but works better than her face in bottle as this creates weird distortions
> This negative space does suggest a more negative tone however? She is missing something? Bottle has taken something away from her? Perhaps that is the message on commercialism that James wants to touch on, should check with him
> Otherwise it is a simple but powerful piece of imagery

> Further explorations on using these bottles as a collection rather than one individual for front page
> Feels less impactful but still an interesting piece of imagery, communicates idea of bottles linked to different people more successfully than other visuals above
> Amount of white space however not as impactful, could be place on another textural image?
> This begins process of complicating design already however

> Soft darker blue photo is not consistent in saturation or vivid level as other images within newspaper or other images played around with for front page and so will need to be cut

> Individual bottles are prominent on the textured manipulated background which will translate really successfully in print to create a powerful dimensional visual
> Difficult to lay out the perfume bottles in a balanced way in large sizes due to their odd shapes and orientations

> Title created with stroke effect to present the stroke motif throughout in text and perfume bottles, soft effect on stroke suggests more ethereal, expressionist abstract quality

> Title may be too complicated for the minimal aesthetic James wanted
> Does it reflect the design style inside?
> Feels like a more developed version of the text inside with variety in types and sizes

> Overall this cover may be too developed for the minimal aesthetic, too collage feel, too fine art
> Red type title also feels horroresque or graffiti rave

> One image full bleed more successful
> More white negative space within this creates a more minimal feel
> Layout works but title may still be too developed for minimal direction

> Works well visually with rest of content so perhaps it's not as consistent as I think

PHOTOGRAPHER FEEDBACK AND DISCUSSION

> like the layout, bits of small text around images, gives photographs a border and brings a layer and editorial feel
> title text is good but wondering whether it can be more bold, less condensed type, more prominent
> Like the perfume bottle concept

> image below white perfume space or branding?
> smaller space?
> play around with size and images
> fill with colour part
> window cut out? take too long
> transparency of paper gsm will allow you to see  paper behind in subtle way anyway
> check stocks 70 gsm might be too thick
> text border info card
> card could be perfume bottle shape
> sprayed with perfume

> sleeve could have perfume bottle negative space, vinyl sticker with perfume bottle cut out from middle? Like a window
> this means cover wouldn't have perfume negative space as you would just see white

> purple
> vinyl sticker of that size too hard to place down without bubbles or creases
> screen printing too difficult
> back to window front cover idea
> plastic wrap used as envelope, perfume bottle stamp?

> card with picture they could keep as art? sticker instead of card as they can be stuck anywhere and are more likely to be used?
> loose stickers, one product one person, @s for our instas
> 10 cm x 10 cm stickers
> could either be bottle shape person sticker or stroke bottle image on top?

AGREED ELEMENTS TO DESIGN
- newspaper
- card info (perfume shape? consistent with perfume theme, reinforces idea that the whole format is created as a subverted perfume advert. These would need to be cut by hand)
- stickers loose inside
- stickers for newspaper wrap based on

Experiments + Outputs to do for James
1 change size of perfume bottle
2 change where it is
3 change image it's on top of
4 fill bottle with other image
5 change type to be less condensed (and as a result change text inside to be consistent?)
6 add second spread with perfume bottle cut out for window effect for cover if not filled in
7 Create two different types of sticker ideas for him to look at

Business card design: possible ways of printing the text:
emboss
white on white (no longer available in digital print)
black on black (colours more appropriate to reflect amount of colours inside newspaper and within collection of photographs)
lilac? cyan? no red
look into GF.Smith paper stocks, duplexing?
Possibility they can do embossing as well check for quote tomorrow

> stamp can be made with perfume sticker
> visual motifs from design within sticker forms that can replicate envelope layout without reducing its ability to be an actual deliverable output

Name Ideas
- personify
- prosopopeia (personify)

FEEDBACK

- 4th one is his favourite
- lower opacity or change layer style to blend it with image more
