Final Developments
Discussion
- photographer really liked my idea of die cutting cover if it wasn't a newspaper
- wants newspaper for mass production and small publication for himself
- publication will have all same content but cover will have die cut perfume bottle outline and this will reveal bottle below
Sample Pack
> Tabloid right size, easy to pick up and read unlike broadsheet
> Bright 70 GSM as original choice is suitable
> Will bring out the colours in the photographs and present them true to as they are
> Does not really feel very newspaper as a paper stock but newspaper format was chosen for its cheap mass production not for its format, otherwise lower paper stock and less bright would be used
COVER REFINEMENTS
> Vertical type more appropriately placed on the left side as this allows space for where the model looks on the page and makes it feel less closed off
> Various layer style options in making the perfume bottle have more interaction with the photograph below and less opacity in general as James asked for
> Important that it doesn't feel too white, but doesn't get lost in the background image
> Don't like the vertical text at the top at all
> Makes it feel closed off around her face
> Move to bottom?
> Segmentation of the type into this format creates a sense of boundaries and structure
> Placing it away from the gaze of the model in the photograph creates this sense that she is breaking free from this constraint
> Subtle hint on the notion of breaking free from something links it back to this idea of subverting commercialism, adapting it to something new, something more human
> Different format for small publication to give it a more specific layout that works to its strengths
> Space in the photograph in its size that allows there to be a spine border
> don't want border to feel too separate, gradient on column and on text above allows all to interact and balance with one another
> Making back cover image smaller means the bottle strokes can be placed half way on this and half on the background alike to the newspaper layout
> Gradient background however does not work
> Image needs to be full bleed to be consistent with front cover layout of full bleed photo
> Layout of stroke bottles changed to adapt to this
> Translating newspaper to A5 publication format means layout changes will have to be made throughout
> Repetition of text from front cover on back cover in alternative colours to create balance and dimension with extra text detail
> Formatting of publication: text changed to all 12 pt minimum to ensure readability
> Means making some text in two lines rather than one to fit with images
> Publication also means ability to create full bleed compared to newspaper, which always need a border for printing
> Use this to my advantage to create full impact pages of photographs
> Additional page for publication for die- cut with perfume bottle on first page
> Also necessary for newspaper as printing company does either 8 or 12 pages no in between
> Allows use of some photographs that didn't have matching perfume counterparts
> Left full bleed image pink tones matching well with perfume
> Pink in over laid hand image also consistent
> James feedback: More detail on perfume page, additional image?
> Added text detail instead, additional images would feel unnecessary and clustered
> Simplicity of perfume image alone and lots of white space creates that balance when going from the front cover which is very busy and colourful
> Communicates to the viewer this is the focus: what does this bottle mean

STICKERS
> Perfume bottles of people photography taken from cover experiments
> Works well in bringing together the overall idea in sticker form
> Layout of all people inside bottles created with bottle form to mind eg. lid block colour area of image, distinctive from main body of perfume
> Title as loose sticker always a good output
> Additional for actual perfume photographs?
> Can pick between these for what goes on plastic sleeve and inside as loose stickers
> Newspaper will be bent in half within plastic sleeve, important that stickers work with these two different appearances
> Front of newspaper too many visuals happening for these stickers
> More text based ones? Take outline of perfume bottles and place pieces of text from inside in these?
> More visual stickers could be placed on bottom fold of newspaper as this is less interesting part of image
> gradient effect on text and background of oval sticker same treatment as publication cover
> Too complicated for newspaper cover sleeve, feels unnecessarily complicated
> More simple stickers such as fill perfume bottle vectors more successful
> Fully white stickers might work better with text as they are less detailed and will allow newspaper aesthetic to breathe?
PEER REVIEW
> Prefer the coloured stickers rather than white ones, which feel very different to rest of aesthetic
> Filled perfume bottles not as interesting as the text gradient ones
> Having two text stickers on front and back makes it feel consistent
> One word too large, numerous key words from content feels unformatted with oval shape
> circular text with focal perfume bottle most successful
> white text overall prominent, legible, gradient coloured background cohesive with cover aesthetic
FINAL STICKERS
> white negative space around filled perfume bottles for plastic sleeve: balances with white element from newspaper white borders and with white text in other stickers
