 PHOTOGRAPHER RESEARCH + DEVELOPMENT










> Could be easily manipulated depending what imagery is paired with it = add additional images from porn sites to book?
> Pairing the images from Ell's photography series to create suggestions on whether it's art or porn 































REFLECTION

> Important to present this relationship between the women in these shoots and then the men, the latter of which become visualised as this gimp character/representation 

> The idea of having a centre glossy section could be for these women depicted, in colour shots, both a comment on this is art and this is empowerment, whilst the rest questions art vs porn and domination vs sub 

> Giving the women a moment of empowerment within the whole publication 



IDEA GENERATION


> Different shoots that investigate the subject of FEMDOM and porn vs art 
> They could be mixed up within the publication to create an all rounded overall investigation or they could be placed into their sections, with an emphasis on the different explorations and ideas?
> Having some form of structure helps the reader follow the story and journey more easily, but complete categorisations may take away the magic of the collection as a whole?  


IDEA 1 - Simple treatment of photography, treatment is the same throughout. Presents photography as focus with minimal type. Involves both colour and b+w photography mixed together within categories of different shoot themes (eg. section on food, section on snakes, section on basement). Questions of art vs porn and male domination vs female empowerment are left to be answered within the photography and through small amounts of text about such ideas. 





IDEA 2 - Focus on FEMDOM and empowering women in porn images. 

> Whole Publication is black and white, with central coloured imagery section dedicated to the photographs of women. This section is there to empower them and provide them the visual space to assert a sense of central control (central at the spine) over the imagery and the theme of fetish and FEMDOM. This section would be a different paper stock, of a thicker more glossy quality for a more tactile prominent feel. This idea could also be used for a focus on art vs porn, with an 'art' glossy section at the centre for coloured photographs. 






IDEA 3 - Focus on the question of art vs porn in the aesthetic and presentation of images. This idea encapsulates numerous variations of the same direction: 

> One Book: Beginning is a more 'art' aesthetic, following stereotypical 'art' type, layout, and direction. This begins to shift into a more 'porn' aesthetic at the centre of the book where the collision of the two concepts is made clear through the design. This 'porn' aesthetic follows a more vintage porn mag aesthetic, one which is darker with type and layout reflecting a sense of taboo. This investigates the question of art vs porn by asserting that if anything ends with explicit imagery, it is ultimately porn, a finding from the art of Elin Magnusson. 

> One Book: Front and Back act as separate books, pages are of different orientation at start and end and cover is designed to guide the reader towards choosing the 'art' side or the 'porn' side. 



> Two Books: Each book is a different presentation, one of 'art' one of 'porn'. This collection would be brought together to create a packaged experience. Each book would involve different imagery, with no photographs repeated (otherwise the reader may be bored?)







> White borders on image gives each image prominence above the black background, which swallows up images (good for full bleed pictures or one image at a time but not for multiple) 
> Also reflective of vintage German porn mags (could do literal insertions of images into the publication for a more tactile feel and additional detail) 




> There's various similar colour and b+w images of the same which could be an interesting way of using colour to create a distinction between the 'art' and 'porn', however this isn't my favourite idea as it feels repetitive and too direct in its comment on the difference between art and porn 
> The series of photographs were also not made to be used in this specific way, and so it would not elevate the images in the same way if it was creatively directed for that purpose 

> Black images on black background doesn't actually work as well as initially planned, however grey may not be a successful alternative either 


FEEDBACK 

> Idea 3 really like visually 
> Like the idea of 2 separate books 
> But prefer the darker black 'porn' aesthetic compared to the white 'art' aesthetic

> Makes more sense to have one book rather than two to show the blur between what art and porn is meeting in the middle

> condom? If a sex item is designed as an art piece does it become a piece of art?

> strip stuck on magazine? or in the sleeve with it?

> Could it also be photographed in a fancy sex box, leather/red velvet 
> If the magazine is pictured in a way that makes it feel like an art piece then this will present the subject matter about art vs porn 
> Needs to be A4 not larger to ensure it can fit a box

THOUGHTS ON TYPEFACES
> typefaces used work really well, porn type works with gothic vintage German style for aesthetic
> modern type, berlin feel
> Both art and porn type decorative type in different ways, art more traditional type porn more modern decorative type, which reflects the ideas well 


DEVELOPMENT 

> Started by working out which images were in the photographer's favourite folder and needed to be added
> Which of these were the most explicit and most 'porn' like, and therefore to place at the end 
> Playing around with general layouts and placements of small amounts of texts 
> Use of textures for backgrounds in 'porn' area instead of just black backgrounds 
> More white textured backgrounds could be used for 'art' section, perhaps inverted backgrounds texture 
> Spreads dedicated to each photoshoot eg. snake 1 spread, rat 1 spread, basement 1 spread














Unsuccessful Ideas

> Hole in leather and round shape hole of mouth could be paired together to create a sense of connection between BDSM gear and the person itself 
> Similar with silver button on leather pictured similar to a nipple?
> However without these images taken with that intention they do not work well enough 
> eg. leather hole would be better orientation, more of a mirror to the mouth and vice versa 


ADDITIONAL GLOSSY MINI 6X4 PICTURES 

> Is it inconsistent to have the women pictured and then a few others of the gimp coloured images that Ell wants printed?
> Peer feedback: Nice idea to have something dedicated to just the women involved, take out additional images of gimp

Identity EVALUATION

Alike to GAIA EXRTH, it was disappointing not being able to complete the brief within the timescale set out. I recognise that I like working a lot on passion projects and pushing them further and further, to the point that perhaps the goals I set are unrealistic or I spend too long on one level/area of the project. In this case this was a research brief and I set out to spend a lot of time doing research and testing ideas. I found this a more difficult brief to do within the covid landscape and felt less inspired, as I wanted to go out into the world and look at things, ask people, visit places and so on. This meant this project took a back seat and by the end of the year revisiting it so late on meant there was no time to fulfil the visions I had for the project. It's exciting however to have so many projects I'm interested in to be continuing after uni as it means I can keep the momentum up of designing and producing more ideas and more work. PPP Task 1 Research

  LAYOUTS and UX I've noticed design studios use for their sites: 1. Simple white layout or black and white layout, sans-serif bold text, no specific logo or style present, scroll down box images of each project 2. Introductory logo used as image window or general logo, interaction leads into actual site  3. More interesting layout utilises UX more and guides the user through the different areas with seamless arrows  4.
