Production 2
EMBOSSING PROCESS
> Decided that the positive laser cut piece would work more successfully then embossing plate created by sticking down positive space pieces
> Pressure applied onto this positive space piece will ensure clear image
> Measurements of publication actual size with additional bleed space for perfect alignment of gimp board
> Embossing plate that can be used for every emboss to ensure accurate alignment on each page, laser cut piece stuck down for this purpose
> Leather paper stock did not emboss as well as previously hoped
> Due to thin width of emboss plate there was possibility for it to be destroyed by the hydraulic press after embossing a few papers, and so I planned to emboss all the leather papers as this was a strong choice for a cover anyway
> Recognised however that there was a chance the fur paper may be a more successful emboss paper
> This was much more successful as the fur texture pressured down meant more distinction between the each level of emboss, and therefore a more distinct image
> Other paper stocks tested after all fur and leather papers embossed to ensure clearest image for best cover options
> Emboss plate did not lose too much depth however did get slightly squashed
> Other paper stocks surprisingly embossed well due to their embossed textures, however the fur paper was still the most successful as the darkest black and clearest image
COMPLETED BOOK PRODUCTION
> Really successful binding production between three copies
> Due to meticulous attention to detail in each step, and the simplicity of the cover, aligning the cover with the pages so that when they were glued the emboss face was central on the front cover went well
> First attempt had face emboss slightly to the left by 2 mm, and so this was altered for following covers when creasing the spine line
> Reducing the book size earlier on to compensate for GF smith sample papers at A3 size was also a very good idea as it meant there was the essential 1 cm leeway for the cutting of the edges and to ensure the cover was also cut into for a consistent edge between the cover and content pages
> All titles and subheadings across spreads are legible due to ensuring space between letterforms at the spine
> Body text legible and good size, photos good quality
> Taking time to change the white backgrounds of small images was good as well as the newer, softer gradient, less pixilation version is more subtle and successful
> Overall aesthetic really successful in physical format, choice of cover reflects tone well and creates sense of hidden taboo with embossing and no text
> Decided glossy images should be placed within the publication spread out across pages
> Doing this reminds the viewer about the women involved, makes them empathise on the topic of violence against women and porn create violence
> Images individually printed chosen specially to give a focus moment to the women and empower them
> Most look into the camera in a way that forces the viewer to connect with them and therefore understand the topic more and it's impact on women
> Slight inconsistency with the last image of girl looking to left, but had to include all women in pictures from photographer and isn't an obvious inconsistency
> All titles beside the additional glossy slip in images also feel very aggressive, makes the reader question the subject even more. Most likely to associate the image of the woman with the headings of 'whore' and 'slut', but once they pick up and remove her image from that spread the dynamics change completely and the images of a woman associated to derogatory terms is subverted as the other picture of the dominated gimp becomes the focus
> Woman picture at centre spine as 'cum slut'
> Viewer physically removes them from the book and aggressive images, an act of educating the reader by having them interact with physical photos of the women
> Appears like she is looking at the violent image on left page in a sadistic way
EVAL CHANGES
> Small amounts of colour found in texture background photo, should have been made black and white
> Possibly could have duplicated small section at centre of cum slut spread image and placed it at the spine so that when bound the words come out from the spine more and would be clearer

> Minimal pixilation on some titles with intertwining aesthetic, despite using photoshop files, TIF higher quality alternative?
> Some typesetting not as high quality as could be, alterations between kerning noticeable and no change in text should feel noticeable when reading
> May be more appropriate to apply hyphenation when using justified text otherwise problems arise
> Despite hyphenation good for making easy legible reading generally, it can also make for easier reading if other factors become an issue in formatting like kerning differences
> While the fur cover worked the best with embossing, a leather cover would have been more reflective of a gimp mask and the general photography inside around this gimp
> To make it a deeper more prominent and therefore clearer embossing I could have added a layer of grey board, as it makes more depth and gives more space for the emboss plate to press into
> This would have meant making the publication/magazine into a hard bound publication, which would have elevated it as an art piece, and its reference to the question of art vs porn
> With more time I would liked to have explored this
CONDOM PACKET DEVELOPMENT
> Simple cover for condoms needed to ensure no explicit materials visible on outside of publication content
> Envelope idea, all pieces to open to reveal condoms
> Strip of condoms? Cover for this would be so large in comparison to the book that it would take too much focus on the outside within the sleeve
> 3 condoms together may be too thick in packet especially when fitting this and the publication into A4 sleeve
> 1 condom with small space around = 7 cm x 7 cm
> Extra paper stock used for packages, good use use of leather stock to include it somehow into overall design
> Leather paper frays easily when folded, shows that if were used for publication would have been unsuccessful as spine would have frayed
> When not touched a lot however the fraying does not happen and so all further packages created were left unfolded until time of shoot
> Sticker could be designed for condom package but with time frame and money spent this isn't the best choice
> Black vinyl hand cut into shape sticker? Heel? Slave paddle sex toy? Should be more simple
> Black square too simple and boring
> Package could be tied up? Themes of tying up in BDSM and therefore in photography. Black ribbon or thread?
> Shouldn't feel too decorative, too like a nicely packaged present
> Could twine around ribbon like BDSM rope tying
NEXT STEPS
> Different condom package ties
> Photography shoot of publication
