Development 2
> Separation of the initial very experimental pages design to spread out the already made graphics across the publication
> Also means the two spreads will work better with the more simple designs, as having the initial designs put with the more simple ones would feel inconsistent as a submission
> Strong powerful images that can be made into simple full bleed spreads
> Could use additional graphics, perhaps a rounded box around her? Small amount of vertical text on edges?
> Another spread that uses the pulled apart initial experimental design spread
> Playing around with the photos when there are a lot of the same type of image that Rhianna wants including
> Have to find ways that doesn't make them feel repetitive and boring, or make them feel less impactful and interesting as the viewer looks at them more
> Inspired by the David Benski use of paint tool in his publication, this also works well with the stroke and drop shadow version on previous spread
> Manipulation with more water textures like previous spread to strengthen its colours?
> Layering with solid colour rectangle and water texture image all create magical alien feeling quality to image which makes it more interesting
> Chopping up this texture and adding it to an overlay gradient strip of the publication neon green and specific spread outfit lilac creates background colour and texture for the right page
> Simple rounded green stroke and drop shadow of additional image keeps it simple beside more complicated and manipulated image
> Same use of page edge green strips, to continue the use of neon green throughout publication
> Also helps to fill in space missing from images themselves to fit onto the page without enlarging the photo and losing some of it at the bottom or top
> Another use of water texture for background texture but different textural depth of each image allows different levels of colour which creates a nice range between use of water texture
> Additional image had to be added to right hand image to ensure compositional balance within circular crop
> Should be neon green stroke outlined for consistency of treatment of layered images here
> Generally printing of this publication later on will be difficult and I need to explore alternative avenues that could enable brighter colour printing, perhaps use of spot pantone colours or different printers?
> Instead of using three of very similar images on a spread, using one image and turning it into a spread makes it more of an impact image
> content aware fill for this creates interesting experimental collage effect that also enhances the alien tone and matches well with Rhianna's use of distortion and manipulation in her images
> Sticking with creating simple spreads for many of the pages for the time frame, a simple use of the green borders works really well in adding that extra graphic element and bringing in that green colour that is used throughout
> Gradient also added and matched with the photo composition to make interaction between photos and graphics, even if subtle
> Had to add more image to left photo to ensure it is balanced on the page with models image and reflection centred with equal spacing from top and bottom of page
> Add text along the floor line in left image? Play with perspective?
> Really powerful images with the use of smoke but it doesn't feel very matched to the colours and art direction in the rest of the publication, feels more appropriate to other publication photos series which use earthy, darker, smoky images
> Nevertheless has to be included for Rhianna's submission to show range of images but may think about taking this out or manipulating it in a way that appeals to Rhianna and is more bright
> Content aware fill to add more of the darker smoke image to the left, allowing the smoke to become a texture background for a similar image above
> Lots of the vivid green type and use of layering in the heading type to create sense of dimension> Typeface is more of an organic, decorative but contemporary and sleek serif than the first initial choice of a futuristic condensed sans serif
> This gives it a more gentle human quality I think
> Key words to present the main theme of the spread works well, could be what GAIA is providing the people on this new planet?
COVER DESIGN
> Rhianna wants similar cover to Preternatural in that it utilises a a front to back continuous photo from her collection
> Using one that has more distortion on one side creates an interesting narrative as the reader flips from front to back cover
> Orientation made to have the mirrored face looking at the viewer at the back, to reflect the new connection between GAIA and the reader once they've been through the publication
> Using the water texture overlay technique to create a magical alien aesthetic that could be printed on a silver stock to create a shiny cover/ printed with metallic inks
> Alternately the text could be made metallic so they stand out (and would be cheaper)
> Rather than a singular title horizontal or vertical on cover, this continuous one provides a sense of never ending connection and narrative, one that suggests something organic, comforting and so on.
> It also frames the image nicely, and is a layout that can be replicated for the second publication in making the duo collection
> Like the fact that it's not necessarily super prominent or clear on the image, as it creates this sense of something mystical
> Bright green as consistent with the text and detail inside
> Inner cover and first page presents the name and credit details again inside so that the reader can read them clearly
> Text revolves around Rhianna's given ideas on narratives for the publication put into the brief, and it can be used for the second publication as a collection but with the second narrative changed to power to reflect the tone of the images
